Behind Giyani Petroleum
Millicent Mulelu, a stalwart of the petrochemical industry, started her career as a chemical graduate recruit at Shell Downstream South Africa. Her starting role at their blending plant evolved into 23 years of experience – including gaining expertise on inverted oils and other specialities from her time at the then Cera plant, to becoming the first female of colour to become a technical advisor at Shell. Here she handled big corporate clients such as Nissan and BMW assembling plant, Bokomo, Coca-Cola and SA plants. Millicent supported engineers and tribologists in optimising lube consumptions through training, monitoring and implementation, reducing downtime. In 2007, her team assisted one of the major mining houses to achieve savings of over USD1m, through the introduction of new formulation products to increase oil drainage intervals on mining dump trucks – the highlight of her technical career.
Completing her Advanced IMM Diploma, Millicent moved on to sales in commercial divisions, with customers in long-haul transport, manufacturing sectors and the mining sectors. In her aviation sales role she managed global carriers and improved the service levels and margins of the organisations through her advanced insights on customers and value propositions. Her excellent people skills and successful outcomes earned her the role of marketing executive overseeing Shell’s commercial fuels business. Here she worked closely with the branded distributor network, assisting their business growth through effective bespoke value propositions and customer offers for a diverse end consumer.
Today Millicent is the proud founder of her own petroleum company, Giyani Petroleum where customers appreciate her wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry.
